What will be the Effect of Drinking Soda on our Teeth?

We must be surely interested in biology science fair project which is for school students whose aim is to be a doctor or a dentist. The equipments used in the biology projects are not generally used at home. These equipments are only available in the school science labs. The equipments are mostly expensive. There must be a question that which kind of sodas or other beverages are bad for our teeth, as we cannot do a direct experiment on people because it can damage their teeth. In this experiment we have to use soda as well as limestone pieces for a long time. We are using limestone because limestone is the only substance which is not like teeth, covered with enamel and limestone is porous which will allow the soda or other beverages to react faster.

In this project we will need small pieces of limestone of same size and weight, a weighing scale, 5 dishes, microscope, litmus paper and different beverages and soda. Firstly we have to find which beverage is bad for our teeth like coca cola, orange juice, root beer, soda, and water. The events are quite easy for high school biology fair projects.

1. Measure the size and weight of each limestone pieces.
2. Now, put the limestone pieces in a dish.
3. Pour one beverage on a piece of limestone.
4. Repeat the above with other beverages also.
5. Now test the pH level for every beverage separately and note down the results.
6. Leave the limestone pieces and beverages for a week or more.
7. Take out the limestone pieces out of the beverages and sodas and place it under microscope.
8. We can compare the surface of limestone to the one which has not been immersed in the beverage for a week. Note down the observation in a paper.
9. Dry the limestone pieces and weigh them and then not down the weights.
Result- Some pieces of limestone has a loss in weight while some limestone pieces have the same weight. Now we can check which beverage is harmful to our teeth and which are not or they really do not harm our teeth. As our teeth have an enamel covering we won’t have much loss to our teeth from beverages, but we can see and experience the damage easily.

One can enjoy this biology science fair project and this can be performed easily and the things required are easily available.
